Rehearsing the Revolution is a storytelling game, in which we can experience reality from different perspectives and truths and by doing that, discover what connects us.
The game is sensory and artivistic, personal and universal.
Rehearsing the Revolution shows us how stories make the world, what our possibilities and responsibilities are in relation to the narratives around us and how we can appropriate them.
In Rehearsing the Revolution we want to learn to listen to the voice of the other, to the voice of people but also to other forms of life such as the animals, flora and landscapes around us. We want to develop a new way of dialogue that helps us to have the courage to think in terms of connectedness rather than separation.
We no longer want to avoid conflicts, but rather confront them through the imagination, thus creating a fertile soil for resilient future stories that guarantee the growth of the quality of life. From the awareness that the narratives we create now will soon determine the reality of our (great) (grand)children, we want to take responsibility for the future.

SPACE believes that in the end, real change does not come from the head, but from the heart. Rehearsing the Revolution can make a difference by exploring the emotional side of the story in a playful and safe way. Making an impact through the power of imagination. By playing the game, by entering the fiction together, we get a grip on reality and expose the wicked problems of our time. Playing like children who have yet to master a whole new world, we exercise ourselves in new ways of thinking and broaden our emotional world.
The challenges of our time can only be met together.
Rehearsing the Revolution builds bridges between communities, circles of knowledge and expertise. The project brings together diverse groups of people, from experts on complex issues to local residents, policy makers and artists. We connect city and countryside, rich and poor, scientists and experts by experience.
Groups of people who are diametrically opposed to each other: Hungarians and Roma, Turkish and Greek Cypriots, people on the fringes of society, conspiracy theorists or farmers … they all have a piece of the truth that is dear to them. When we bring these grains of truths into respectful dialogue with each other, space is created to discover what we share with each other.
Rehearsing the Revolution is basically about experiencing the changes that are necessary to make us resilient and prepared for the challenges of the future.
The project allows the audience, who are active participants and not passive spectators, to experience what it is like to look at the same reality differently, where the differences lie and, above all, where the common ground can be found.
During the Rehearsing the Revolution game, we put ourselves in someone else’s shoes and make fictional revolutions linked to current challenges. We practice how we can look further, understand other people and work together towards a common goal. These times call for engagement and action. The pandemic has brought inequality, institutional and subcutaneous racism, polarization and the challenges of climate change into sharp focus. These major issues are now visibly present in our daily lives and generate many tensions. Before every major change, there is a crisis. The question is how to seize the momentum and learn from it. What is our story? What and how do we want to change? What are our differences and what do we have in common?

The sustainable cooperation between Cyprus, Hungary and the Netherlands arose within the framework of the Culture of Solidarity call of the ECF. We investigate how we can use art to create a new shared but pluriform European narrative that is alive and not a dusty collection of white ideals based on historical amnesia.

Rehearsing the Revolution is the preliminary stage of the international collaboration the Common Ground Dialogues, a multi-year project in which artists, scholars and civic organizations from Hungary, the Netherlands, Cyprus and France explore a new way of conducting dialogue to combat polarization.
Rehearsing The Revolution is een storytelling spel, waarin we de werkelijkheid vanuit verschillende oogpunten en waarheden kunnen ervaren en ontdekken wat ons bindt.
Het spel is zintuiglijk en artivistisch, kleinmenselijk en universeel.
Rehearsing the Revolution laat zien en voelen hoe verhalen de wereld maken, wat onze mogelijkheden en verantwoordelijkheden zijn ten opzichte van die narratieven om ons heen en hoe we ons het verhaal kunnen toe eigenen.
In Rehearsing the Revolution willen we leren luisteren naar de stem van de ander, naar mensen maar ook naar andere levensvormen zoals de dieren en de landschappen om ons heen. We willen een nieuw manier van dialoog voeren ontwikkelen die ons helpt om in verbondenheid te durven denken in plaats van in scheiding. We willen de conflicten niet meer uit de weg gaan maar ze aangaan in de verbeelding en zo een bodem creëren voor weerbare toekomstverhalen die de groei van de kwaliteit van het leven waarborgen. Vanuit het besef dat de narratieven die wij nu maken straks de werkelijkheid van onze (achter)(klein)kinderen bepalen, willen we verantwoordelijkheid nemen voor de toekomst.

Rehearsing the Revolution slaat bruggen tussen gemeenschappen, kenniskringen en expertise. Het project brengt diverse groepen mensen bij elkaar, van experts van complexe vraagstukken tot aan buurtbewoners, beleidsmakers en kunstenaars. We verbinden stad met platteland, rijk met arm, wetenschappers met ervaringsdeskundigen.
Mensengroepen die lijnrecht tegenover elkaar staan; Hongaren en Roma’s, Turkse en Griekse Cyprioten, mensen aan de randen van de samenleving, complotdenkers of boeren … ze hebben allemaal een stukje van de waarheid die dierbaar voor hen is. Als we die korreltjes waarheden respectvol in dialoog brengen met elkaar, ontstaat er ruimte om te ontdekken wat we met elkaar delen.
Rehearsing the Revolution gaat in de basis over het ervaren van de veranderingen die nodig zijn om ons weerbaar te maken en voor te bereiden voor de uitdagingen van de toekomst.
Het project laat het publiek, die actieve deelnemers en geen passieve toeschouwers zijn, ervaren hoe het is om anders naar dezelfde werkelijkheid te kijken, waar de verschillen liggen maar vooral waar het gemeenschappelijke, de common ground, te vinden is.
Tijdens het Rehearsing the Revolution spel leven we ons in de denkwijze van een ander en maken we fictieve revoluties gelinkt aan actuele uitdagingen. We oefenen hoe we verder kunnen kijken, andersdenkenden kunnen begrijpen, kunnen samenwerken aan een gemeenschappelijk doel. Deze tijd roept om betrokkenheid en actie. De pandemie heeft ongelijkheid, institutioneel en onderhuids racisme, polarisatie en de klimaatproblematiek scherp gesteld. Deze grote onderwerpen zijn nu zichtbaar aanwezig in ons dagelijks leven en leveren veel spanningen op. Vóór elke grote verandering is er een crisis. De vraag is hoe we het momentum kunnen pakken en ervan leren. Wat is ons verhaal? Wat en hoe willen wij veranderen? Wat zijn onze verschillen en wat hebben we gemeen?

De duurzame samenwerking tussen Cyprus, Hongarije en Nederland is ontstaan in het kader van het Culture of Solidarity traject van de ECF. We onderzoeken hoe we via kunst tot een nieuw gezamenlijk maar pluriform Europees narratief kunnen komen dat levendig is en geen stoffige verzameling witte idealen gebaseerd op historisch amnesie.

Rehearsing the Revolution is het voortraject van de internationale samenwerking de Common Ground Dialogen, een meerjarig project waarin kunstenaars, wetenschappers en burgerorganisaties uit Hongarije, Nederland, Cyprus en Frankrijk een nieuwe manier van dialoog voeren onderzoeken om de polarisatie te bestrijden.

SPACE gelooft dat wezenlijke veranderingen uiteindelijk niet vanuit het hoofd, maar vanuit het hart komen. Rehearsing the Revolution kan een verschil maken door de emotionele kant van het verhaal op een speelse en veilige manier te onderzoeken. Impact maken via de kracht van de verbeelding. Door het spel te spelen, door samen de fictie betreden, krijgen we grip op de werkelijkheid en leggen we de wicked problems van onze tijd bloot. Spelend als kinderen die nog een hele nieuwe wereld moeten eigen maken, oefenen we ons in nieuwe denkwijzen en verbreden we ons gevoelswereld. De uitdagingen van onze tijd kunnen we alleen samen aan.
